Pokémon Type Quiz, guess from the types
Every Pokémon has one or two types out of the eighteen that exist, which set its strengths and weaknesses in battle. In this quiz you find the mystery Pokémon from its types and clues such as the generation, the base stat total or the form. It is the perfect mode to review type matchups while having fun.
The eighteen types and how dual typing works
The type system is the foundation of Pokémon battles. There are eighteen types today: Normal, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy. Steel and Dark were introduced in the second generation, and Fairy in the sixth generation to rein in the overly dominant Dragons.
A Pokémon has a single type or two combined types. A dual type stacks the weaknesses and resistances of both: Charizard, a Fire and Flying type, takes a quadruple weakness to Rock, since both of its types are vulnerable to it. Recognizing these combinations is the key to quickly narrowing down the list of candidates in the quiz.
Move effectiveness: super effective, not very effective, immunity
A move can be super effective (double damage, x2), not very effective (half damage, x0.5) or have no effect (x0). On a dual type the multipliers stack, so a move can deal x4 against a double weakness or only x0.25 against a double resistance.
Some matchups are full immunities worth memorizing: Ground has no effect on Flying Pokémon, Electric does not hit Ground, Normal and Fighting cannot damage Ghost, Psychic has no effect on Dark, Poison does not touch Steel, and Dragon has no effect on Fairy. Finally, a move that shares the attacker's type gets the STAB bonus, a x1.5 boost to its damage.
Strategy to guess faster
Start with a common dual-type Pokémon to cover as many possibilities as you can, then read the clues: the generation places the era of the mystery Pokémon, the base stat total tells a frail Pokémon from a powerhouse, and the size refines it further. Water is the most common type in the Pokédex, while Flying almost always appears as a secondary type.
How to play
- Guess a Pokémon: the game compares its types to the mystery.
- Clues tell you whether the generation, stat total or size is higher or lower.
- Refine your guesses until you find the right Pokémon.
How many types are there? Eighteen since the sixth generation. Can a Pokémon have three types? No, two at most in standard battles. Which type has the most Pokémon? Water, by a wide margin.
